| XXVI. Commemorative issue of 15th
October 1922 |
This issue commemorates the coronation of King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria. Printed by
Bayerische Staatsdruckerei in Munich after designs by the painter
Ludovic Bassarab. He produced a large number of drawings for this issue, from which 12
were selected, and essays submitted thereof.

The tall officer behind the King is Gen. Averescu
From these, 7 designs were finally chosen and
adopted. These were the first Romanian stamps produced by photogravure - the reason the
contract went to Germany. The distance separating the printer (Munich) from the postal
authorities (Bucharest), was the reason for the production of the unusual, multiple design
trial cylinders, and the large range of design/colour trials. The watermarked essays are
gummed and can be found perforated 11 1/2.
For this issue, at least three different cylinders were used:
Large cylinder, small cylinder and 6-on cylinder
All values from one cylinder exists in the same colour shades (natural law!)
Thus, no particular listings for each value will be made

From the 86-subject proofing cylinder, impressions were taken up on thick card and on
watermarked paper, as illustrated here:
8 impressions of: 1 Leu (A), 1 Leu (I), 3 Lei (L), 2
Lei (G), 25 Bani(G), 5 Bani (F), 50 B(H)
6 impressions of: 5 Lei (C), 5 Lei (E),5 Bani
(D), 5 Lei (M), 3 Lei (K).
As these were orientated differently, the watermark became either horizontal or vertical.
